There's far more geometric complexity, you can fully explore your surroundings, something that was genuinely mind-blowing back in 1996, and the combat gets a real turbo-boosted kick up the backside from the resulting freedom and new level of traversal it offers. Instead there's almost as much exploration and puzzling as there is shooting here, and it's made all the more immersive by the leap in technology brought about by its fully 3D game engine. This isn't simply an endless siege or a full on mindless assault involving hordes of demonic foes, although there's still plenty of that. Possibly even for a first time playthrough, as the only difference you'll likely notice is how the Super Nailgun behaves differently.On the face of things, it all looks very DOOM-esque, but getting to grips with this one reveals a game that's so much more nuanced in terms of its action, in its level design and in how it goes about placing its enemies. It's not compatible with modded content, but I would highly recommend playing any vanilla content through it. It fixes many bugs and addresses many under the hood design issues to make the game play much smoother without feeling any fundamentally different. But we'd be here all day and Arcane Dimensions, Alkaline, and Dwell are probably the most significant.Ĭopper Mod is almost like an unofficial official patch for the game. Second there's a lot of map packs I could recommend. Or VKQuake if you lean more towards a slightly more modern look (it's near identical to Ironwail but supports a few things like custom particles and pathtraced shadows that Ironwail currently doesn't).įirst, you'll find that Quaddicted, Slipseer, and to a lesser extent func_msgboard are the main community hubs for finding maps, mods, news, etc. I highly recommend using Ironwail instead as the best all-around port. Even then the quality of online play is pretty trash compared to other multiplayer port alternatives anyway.You only really lose out on achievements and crossplay by not using it. The models can be ripped out, converted if necessary, and used in any other sourceport of your choice.It is far more limited in options customization.And anything more specialized like Quake 1.5, Nehahra or Slayers Testaments is going to outright require a different port instead. It can run most mods but does run into problems with specific mods and maps. I still get occasional stutters even on my high end machine.
